The revelations from 2021's Congressional Hearings and whistleblower testimony has been eye-opening with respect to the devastation that unfettered Big Tech has wrecked upon our kids in almost every aspect of their lives.  While prevention education remains our primary focus, we recognize the need for legislation to reign in Big Tech's stranglehold on our kids and influencing every aspect of their lives.

To that end, we have aligned primarily with Fairplay for Kids and Parents-Together, two non-profits dedicated to improving the lives of children.  Erik's Cause members also volunteer to participate in Fairplay's Online Harms sub-group dedicated to advocating for a safer online experience for kids.

There are so many bills pending in so many states that the easiest way to find them is to search the below documents:

As concerns arise regarding the effects of social media usage on children's mental health, state legislators are introducing measures to protect children while using the internet and internet-based forms of communication, including social media. The legislation includes bills and resolutions that:

  • Create study commissions and task forces.
  • Establish age-appropriate design codes and require impact assessments.
  • Require age verification or parental consent to open social media accounts.
  • Add digital and media literacy courses or curriculum for K-12 students.

Push to Rein in Social Media Sweeps the States

State bills to regulate / reform social media basically fall into four major categories: More than two dozen, pushed by Republicans, seek to prevent companies from censoring content or blocking users.

Others, pushed by Democrats, aim to require companies to provide mechanisms for reporting hate speech or misinformation. Lawmakers of both parties support proposals to protect children from addiction to social media (and specifically regulating addictive algorithms). A fourth, also with bipartisan support, would impose transparency requirements.

All of these efforts are vigorously opposed by NetChoice and the Computer and
Communications Industry Association (lobbying groups representing Big Tech) which have
resulted in multiple lawsuits filed against various states.
